Dr Phil Hoenle

Postdoctoral Associate

My name is Philipp, and I have a lifelong passion for ants. I am primarily an ant ecologist working on a wide variety of topics, including army ant predation and ant taxonomy.

Since joining the MicroMaze project in 2025 as a postdoctoral researcher, I’ve focused on how microclimate influences ant species coexistence. My work is at the intersection of laboratory experiments and field research, testing how physiological theory translates to observed ant behaviour in natural environments.

Based primarily at Cardiff University in Tom Bishop’s Traits Lab, I also conduct experiments at the University of Cape Town and lead field work expeditions to South Africa’s Cederberg mountains.
